FAQ

How long does this process take?
We will come to your location (home) and prep the bathtub for the perfect finish. We will then apply the new surface. This step usually takes 2-3 hours, depending on the condition of your bathtub. We return the next day if necessary, after the new surface is fully cured, perform any neccessary clean-up, replace fixtures as needed, and apply new caulk. This usually takes up to an hour. Voila! You have a new bathroom.

Are you properly licensed to work as a contractor in my area?
Surface Solutions, LLC, is fully licensed, bonded, insured, and available to work in the greater Detroit Metropolitan area.

Should I do anything special before you arrive?
It is important that you make sure that the surfaces to be resurfaced are as clean as possible. Please clean floors, wallls, vents, etc that may have dust on them. This will reduce the chances of dust or other contaminants falling into the coating. Surface Solutions will be cleaning the surface as part of our process. However, we find that the finished product is improved when the surface is reasonably clean when we arrive. Any fixtures (drains, faucets, etc.) that are going to be replaced should be removed or replaced before we arrive. Take any link that says PREPARATION for more instructions.

If my tub has been refinished before, can it be refinished again?
Yes. However, we will have to strip off the old finish.

If I am remodeling my bathroom, when should I contact you?
We ask that you contact us as soon as possible to set up a date. You should have any new tile around the tub fully installed before refinishing. It is recommended that any major construction, cabinet installations, wall modifications, etc., be fully completed before refinishing is applied. This will help to make sure that your new finish is not accidentally damaged by the other work being performed. If other work must be completed after the resurfacing process, notify the contractors so they will not put ladders or tools in or on the new finish. The tub should not be used for cleaning paint brushes and etc.

What if I want a custom color?
We can match any color in the Kohler and Sherwin-Williams pallette. Just provide us with a color sample and allow one week for us to order the custom color. For specific instructions on how to provide a color sample or how to order a custom color for your bathtub refinishing, use the contact form below, or call us at 734-455-0200.

How soon can I use the tub after it has been resurfaced?
Ideally, you should wait 48 hours before using the bathtub again. We understand that this is not always possible, so light use is acceptable after 24 hours. DO NOT CLEAN THE TUB DURING THIS PERIOD. Especially during the first 48 hours, extra care should be taken to make sure that items such as toys, razors, or other personal hygiene items are not banged on or scrape the surface. It takes 7-10 days for a tub to be fully cured and achieve maximum hardness. The refinishing tech that performs your resurfacing will leave you with printed instructions to help you understand how to get the most out of your newly refinished tub.

Will there be fumes or odors from the process?
While we make every effort to keep fumes to a minimum by using industrial grade exhaust equipment, there will be some noticeable odor, especially immediately after the job. These odors will dissipate throughout the day. You may wish to keep the bathroom door closed after we leave.

How do I care for my finish?
We will leave you with a full set of printed instructions for care of your newly refinished bathtub or other fixture. A few important points to remember are that during the first 7-10 days, the finish is still curing, so it is best to take special care during this period and keep use to a minimum. Going forward, it will be best to clean your tub lightly, but in greater frequency. For example, clean lightly a couple times per week, instead of waiting for a month when only hard scrubbing will remove the inevitable build-up. Additionally, soap scum and other residue can trap water beneath it on the surface, and over time deteriorate the finish. Use only non-abrasive and non-corrosive cleaning products. Please avoid storing soap and other items directly on the surface, use a rack of some sort. Any standing water can deteriorate this finish and your bathtub (this is, in fact, often a reason that we are called in to refinish a bathtub). Any leaky faucets should be repaired by a qualified professional ASAP. The caulk seal around your tub should be water tight and maintained. If there is ever any break or holes in your caulk, they should be sealed immediately so as to avoid water getting around the side of the tub and possibly between the tub and the new finish.

You may view a map on our Service Area page for a better idea, or call us at any time, 734-788-5838. How long will my new finish last?
With proper care and maintenance, your new finish will last many, many years.

Do you use acid etch or a bonding agent??
We use the Bond Rite "powerbond" bonding agent. This is the most effective and durable method for bonding the new surface to the old. This bonding agent causes a molecular bond between the two surfaces. It "super glues" the new coating to the old surface.
